Most visitors to Thailand can enter visa-free for short tourist trips, but the exact rules depend on your nationality, purpose of travel, and how long you plan to stay — and there's mandatory online paperwork to do before you even land.

Do I need a visa for Thailand?

From 15 September 2026, nationals of the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, and 41 other countries can enter Thailand without a visa for up to 30 days, but strictly for tourism. This visa exemption does not cover business travel, including conferences or meetings — anyone travelling for business purposes must get the appropriate visa before departure. Separately, nationals of 20 countries are eligible for a Visa on Arrival (VOA) at 24 designated checkpoints, including all international airports, allowing a maximum stay of 15 days. Because eligibility is country-specific, check your nationality against the official Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or your nearest embassy before you travel.

What are the passport and entry requirements?

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date and have at least one blank page. Tourists entering without a visa typically also need to show adequate finances — at least 10,000 Baht per person or 20,000 Baht per family — plus a round-trip air ticket.

What is the TDAC and do I need it?

Yes. From 1 May 2025, every foreign national entering Thailand by air, land, or sea must complete a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before arrival, registered within 3 days of landing. It's free and is not a visa — your existing visa requirements or visa-exemption status stay the same. You must register a new TDAC every time you enter the country.

What if I need a tourist e-visa?

If you don't qualify for visa-free entry or VOA, you can apply for a tourist e-visa. You'll need financial evidence of at least 20,000 THB (e.g., three months of bank statements), and it's recommended to apply 6–8 weeks before departure. Fees are 2,000 Baht for single entry or 5,000 Baht for multiple entries, with visas typically valid for 3 months. On arrival, the permitted stay under a tourist visa is up to 60 days. Note that no visa type permits work in Thailand unless a separate work permit has been granted.

What are the customs basics?

You're limited to 200 cigarettes per person; bringing in more can mean a fine of 10 times the value and confiscation. More broadly, Thailand has strict customs rules, so declare anything that might be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

A local data SIM or eSIM can be useful for accessing the TDAC portal and immigration updates on the go — see Thailand destination info for more.

FAQ

Is the TDAC the same as a visa? No — it's a free digital arrival card required for all foreign nationals, separate from any visa or visa-exemption status.

Can I do business activities under the visa exemption scheme? No — business travel, including conferences and meetings, requires the appropriate visa obtained before travel.

How long can tourist visa holders stay? Upon arrival, the permitted stay is not exceeding 60 days; always verify current rules at immigration.go.th before travelling, since requirements change.
