[ / How much data ]

How much data do you need for Japan and South Korea?

For a two-week trip split between the two, most travelers need about 10 GB: roughly 700 MB a day for maps, messaging, social media and photo uploads.

Light

≈ 300 MB / day

Maps, messaging and email.

Typical

≈ 700 MB / day

Adds social media, music and photo uploads.

Heavy

≈ 2 GB / day

Adds video calls, streaming or a laptop hotspot.

Planning averages, not daily limits. For scale, Netflix uses up to 0.7 GB an hour in SD and 3 GB in HD; a video call about 1 GB an hour.

[ / Saving data ]

Make your data last

A few habits stretch any plan. More ways to track and cut mobile data use.

Save maps offline

Download the Japanese cities you'll visit in Google Maps before you fly.

Turn on Low Data Mode or Data Saver

Background updates and photo backups then wait for Wi-Fi.

Use free Wi-Fi when it's there

Japan's major airports and most city hotels have it. In Korea it's in airports and in subway and train stations.

[ / One eSIM or two ]

One eSIM for both countries, or two separate eSIMs?

For most trips, one eSIM is the simpler choice: install it at home and your data follows you across the border. Two single-country eSIMs can cost less, but you manage two plans.

[ / Apps ]

Apps you'll need data for in Japan and South Korea

Data matters most in South Korea, where the apps locals rely on are Korean. In Japan, the apps you already use mostly just work.

KRINSTALL FIRST

Naver Map · KakaoMap

Google Maps doesn't do walking or driving turn-by-turn in Korea (The Korea Herald, Sep 2026). Both have English and live subway and bus arrivals.

KR

Papago

Camera, voice and conversation translation.

KR

k.ride · Baemin

Kakao Mobility's taxi app for visitors takes cards issued outside Korea. Baemin now has English ordering and takes foreign cards through Apple Pay.

KR

Korean ID checks

Concert and baseball tickets and some restaurant bookings need Korean phone verification (The Korea Times, May 2026). Book on English-language sites that take your card, or buy at the venue.

JP

Suica · PASMO · ICOCA

Add them to Apple Wallet on iPhone 8 or newer, or use JR East's Welcome Suica Mobile. Google Wallet Suica works only on phones sold in Japan. Google Maps and GO, S.RIDE, Uber and DiDi taxis all work in English.

JP+KR

WhatsApp · LINE · KakaoTalk

LINE is Japan's everyday messenger and KakaoTalk is Korea's. All three run over mobile data.

[ / Calls and texts ]

Phone number, SMS codes and calls

The eSIM is data-only: no phone number, no calls, no texts. Keep your home SIM on as a second line so bank and app codes still reach you, with its data roaming off. Call over WhatsApp, FaceTime, LINE or KakaoTalk.

Receiving texts abroad is free on many plans, but not all. Check with your home carrier.

Coverage is Japan + South Korea, or 14 countries, or 20 countries, or 19 countries, or 12 countries, or China + Japan + South Korea — where the data service works, and the operator names are the ones the network reports for each plan.

Can I make calls or send SMS?

No. Lumo plans for Japan and South Korea are data-only — they provide mobile internet with no calls, SMS or phone number. Keep your primary SIM active if you need voice and text.

Will my phone work with a Lumo eSIM?

Most phones released from 2018 onwards support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and many Samsung Galaxy models. Check Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) for an eSIM or Add Cellular Plan option, and make sure the phone is carrier-unlocked.

How quickly can I get connected in Japan and South Korea?

No account or registration is required to buy. Your plan arrives instantly by email and activation takes about 30 seconds. Turn on data roaming for the Lumo line once you arrive in Japan and South Korea to start using mobile internet.

Can I get a refund if I do not use my plan?

Unused eSIMs can be cancelled and refunded in full within seven days, as long as they have not been activated. Once an eSIM has been activated it is no longer refundable.

Which eSIM is best for both Japan and Korea?

Look for a plan that names networks in both countries and says what happens after any daily limit. Lumo's Japan and South Korea eSIM uses two networks in each country: KDDI/au and SoftBank in Japan, and SK Telecom and LG U+ in South Korea. It connects to 5G wherever the network offers it.

Which is the best eSIM for multiple countries?

The one whose country list matches your whole route. Fewer countries usually means a lower price and more networks per country. For Japan and South Korea only, a two-country plan is the best fit. If you add China, Hong Kong, Taiwan or Southeast Asia, a regional Asia plan covering all of them is simpler than stacking country plans.

Which eSIM is best for traveling to Japan and China?

One that lists China mainland in its coverage. The two-country plan doesn't, but this page also sells wider options that do: a Japan, China and South Korea plan, and Asia plans that add Hong Kong, Taiwan and more. Pick one of them in the plan options above.

What is the downside of an eSIM?

For a Japan and Korea trip, three things matter. Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. The eSIM is internet only: there's no Japanese or Korean phone number, calls or texts. And it needs internet to install, so set it up at home before you fly. One more rule: never delete it to troubleshoot, because a deleted eSIM usually can't be reinstalled.

Which is better for Japan, Ubigi or Airalo?

Both work well in Japan. Ubigi uses NTT docomo and KDDI and lets you buy data in its app without Wi-Fi. Airalo uses KDDI/au and SoftBank. Tokyo Cheapo's 2025–26 tests in Tokyo averaged 235 Mbps for Airalo and 162 Mbps for Ubigi. If your trip includes Korea, note that Ubigi sells Japan + South Korea only as a $6-a-month subscription with a three-month minimum, and Airalo covers both only through its 18-country Asia plan (10 GB for 30 days, $25). Prices as of 23 September 2026.

Is Airalo or Simify better?

For a trip covering Japan and Korea, Airalo. Simify's Asia eSIMs leave out Japan, so its only plan covering both is Unlimited Global, 128 countries at $33.60 for 7 days on sale. Airalo's 18-country Asialink covers both: 10 GB for 30 days is $25, or $49 for 15 days unlimited. For one country, Simify's unlimited Japan and Korea plans were cheaper on sale: $21 for 7 days, against Airalo's $26.50 (Japan) and $29 (Korea). But Simify has no top-ups and publishes no fair-use limit. Prices as of 23 September 2026.

Does the eSIM work on the ferry between Busan and Fukuoka?

The eSIM uses land-based mobile networks, so it works in port and near the coast, but not reliably at sea. Download what you need before boarding. It reconnects on its own when you arrive.

Do I need to register my passport to use it?

No. Buying needs only an email address, and there's no ID check.
