[ / How much data ]
How much data do you need for Japan and South Korea?
For a two-week trip split between the two, most travelers need about 10 GB: roughly 700 MB a day for maps, messaging, social media and photo uploads.
Light
≈ 300 MB / dayMaps, messaging and email.
Typical
≈ 700 MB / dayAdds social media, music and photo uploads.
Heavy
≈ 2 GB / dayAdds video calls, streaming or a laptop hotspot.
[ / Saving data ]
Make your data last
A few habits stretch any plan. More ways to track and cut mobile data use.
Save maps offline
Download the Japanese cities you'll visit in Google Maps before you fly.
Turn on Low Data Mode or Data Saver
Background updates and photo backups then wait for Wi-Fi.
Use free Wi-Fi when it's there
Japan's major airports and most city hotels have it. In Korea it's in airports and in subway and train stations.
[ / One eSIM or two ]
One eSIM for both countries, or two separate eSIMs?
For most trips, one eSIM is the simpler choice: install it at home and your data follows you across the border. Two single-country eSIMs can cost less, but you manage two plans.
One Japan + South Korea eSIM
[ JP+KR ]- Setup
- Install once, at home, before you fly
- Border
- Nothing to do: it picks the local network when you land
- Data
- One balance for the whole trip, wherever you use it
- Networks
- 🇯🇵 KDDI/au, SoftBank · 🇰🇷 SKTelecom, LG Uplus
Two single-country eSIMs
[ JP ] + [ KR ]- Setup
- Install twice. With short plans, the second goes on mid-trip over Wi-Fi
- Border
- Switch your data line to the second eSIM
- Data
- Split in advance; two plans to track
- Networks
- Some Japan plans add NTT docomo and Rakuten Mobile
[ / Crossing the border ]
Can I use the same eSIM in Japan and South Korea?
Yes. Install it once. Land in Seoul, Busan or Jeju and it joins SK Telecom or LG U+ by itself; back in Japan it rejoins KDDI/au or SoftBank.
No data after you land? 4 quick fixes
- 01Turn off airplane mode.Keep Lumo as your cellular data line, with data roaming on for the Lumo line.
- 02Give it a few minutes. The first connection in a new country can take a little while, occasionally up to an hour.
- 03Still no data after 10 minutes?Airplane mode on for 30 seconds, then off. Still nothing: pick the network yourself (SK Telecom or LG U+ in Korea, KDDI/au or SoftBank in Japan).
- 04Don't delete the eSIM to reset it.A deleted eSIM usually can't be reinstalled.
[ / Good to know ]
Good to know for the trip
Japan and South Korea share a time zone, with no daylight saving, so your phone's clock doesn't change.
The fast Queen Beetle has been permanently withdrawn. The overnight New Camellia is the remaining one.
[ / Networks ]
Networks and 5G coverage in Japan and South Korea
Two of Japan's four national networks and two of Korea's three. It connects to 5G wherever the partner network offers it and your phone supports it.

Apps you'll need data for in Japan and South Korea
Data matters most in South Korea, where the apps locals rely on are Korean. In Japan, the apps you already use mostly just work.
Naver Map · KakaoMap
Google Maps doesn't do walking or driving turn-by-turn in Korea (The Korea Herald, Sep 2026). Both have English and live subway and bus arrivals.
Papago
Camera, voice and conversation translation.
k.ride · Baemin
Kakao Mobility's taxi app for visitors takes cards issued outside Korea. Baemin now has English ordering and takes foreign cards through Apple Pay.
Korean ID checks
Concert and baseball tickets and some restaurant bookings need Korean phone verification (The Korea Times, May 2026). Book on English-language sites that take your card, or buy at the venue.
Suica · PASMO · ICOCA
Add them to Apple Wallet on iPhone 8 or newer, or use JR East's Welcome Suica Mobile. Google Wallet Suica works only on phones sold in Japan. Google Maps and GO, S.RIDE, Uber and DiDi taxis all work in English.
WhatsApp · LINE · KakaoTalk
LINE is Japan's everyday messenger and KakaoTalk is Korea's. All three run over mobile data.
[ / Calls and texts ]
Phone number, SMS codes and calls
The eSIM is data-only: no phone number, no calls, no texts. Keep your home SIM on as a second line so bank and app codes still reach you, with its data roaming off. Call over WhatsApp, FaceTime, LINE or KakaoTalk.
Receiving texts abroad is free on many plans, but not all. Check with your home carrier.
[ / Alternatives ]
eSIM vs roaming, airport SIM or pocket Wi-Fi
One plan for both, bought before you leave, nothing to collect or return. Airport SIMs and pocket Wi-Fi cover one country each.
One country only
[ / Compare providers ]
Best eSIM for Japan and Korea: how providers compare
Few providers sell a plan for these two countries alone. Airalo and Saily cover both only through larger Asia plans. Compare networks and refund terms before you buy.
