[ / How much data ]

How much data do you need for Japan and South Korea?

For a two-week trip split between the two, most travelers need about 10 GB: roughly 700 MB a day for maps, messaging, social media and photo uploads.

Light

≈ 300 MB / day

Maps, messaging and email.

Typical

≈ 700 MB / day

Adds social media, music and photo uploads.

Heavy

≈ 2 GB / day

Adds video calls, streaming or a laptop hotspot.

Planning averages, not daily limits. For scale, Netflix uses up to 0.7 GB an hour in SD and 3 GB in HD; a video call about 1 GB an hour.

[ / Saving data ]

Make your data last

A few habits stretch any plan. More ways to track and cut mobile data use.

Save maps offline

Download the Japanese cities you'll visit in Google Maps before you fly.

Turn on Low Data Mode or Data Saver

Background updates and photo backups then wait for Wi-Fi.

Use free Wi-Fi when it's there

Japan's major airports and most city hotels have it. In Korea it's in airports and in subway and train stations.

[ / One eSIM or two ]

One eSIM for both countries, or two separate eSIMs?

For most trips, one eSIM is the simpler choice: install it at home and your data follows you across the border. Two single-country eSIMs can cost less, but you manage two plans.

[ / Crossing the border ]

Can I use the same eSIM in Japan and South Korea?

Yes. Install it once. Land in Seoul, Busan or Jeju and it joins SK Telecom or LG U+ by itself; back in Japan it rejoins KDDI/au or SoftBank.

No data after you land? 4 quick fixes

  1. 01Turn off airplane mode.Keep Lumo as your cellular data line, with data roaming on for the Lumo line.
  2. 02Give it a few minutes. The first connection in a new country can take a little while, occasionally up to an hour.
  3. 03Still no data after 10 minutes?Airplane mode on for 30 seconds, then off. Still nothing: pick the network yourself (SK Telecom or LG U+ in Korea, KDDI/au or SoftBank in Japan).
  4. 04Don't delete the eSIM to reset it.A deleted eSIM usually can't be reinstalled.

[ / Apps ]

Apps you'll need data for in Japan and South Korea

Data matters most in South Korea, where the apps locals rely on are Korean. In Japan, the apps you already use mostly just work.

KRINSTALL FIRST

Naver Map · KakaoMap

Google Maps doesn't do walking or driving turn-by-turn in Korea (The Korea Herald, Sep 2026). Both have English and live subway and bus arrivals.

KR

Papago

Camera, voice and conversation translation.

KR

k.ride · Baemin

Kakao Mobility's taxi app for visitors takes cards issued outside Korea. Baemin now has English ordering and takes foreign cards through Apple Pay.

KR

Korean ID checks

Concert and baseball tickets and some restaurant bookings need Korean phone verification (The Korea Times, May 2026). Book on English-language sites that take your card, or buy at the venue.

JP

Suica · PASMO · ICOCA

Add them to Apple Wallet on iPhone 8 or newer, or use JR East's Welcome Suica Mobile. Google Wallet Suica works only on phones sold in Japan. Google Maps and GO, S.RIDE, Uber and DiDi taxis all work in English.

JP+KR

WhatsApp · LINE · KakaoTalk

LINE is Japan's everyday messenger and KakaoTalk is Korea's. All three run over mobile data.

[ / Calls and texts ]

Phone number, SMS codes and calls

The eSIM is data-only: no phone number, no calls, no texts. Keep your home SIM on as a second line so bank and app codes still reach you, with its data roaming off. Call over WhatsApp, FaceTime, LINE or KakaoTalk.

Receiving texts abroad is free on many plans, but not all. Check with your home carrier.

[ / FAQ ]

Questions about Japan and South Korea.

Still stuck? Talk to support.

How much does this plan cost?

1 prepaid eSIM plan on this page, from $57.00 USD — a one-off purchase with no contract and no subscription. Options on the same page differ by coverage or by speed, never by validity.

Which networks does a Lumo eSIM use in Japan and South Korea?

By option: 20 countries — Optus · Telstra · Metfone · China Unicom · csl · Jio · Vodafone · IDEA · AirTel · Telkomsel · Pelephone · KDDI/au · STC · CTM · Maxis · CelcomDigi · U Mobile · Spark · Telenor · Globe · Mobily · M1 · SingTel · SKTelecom · 3 · DTAC · TrueMove H · MobiFone · Viettel Mobile · Vietnamobile. Coverage is 20 countries — where the data service works, and the operator names are the ones the network reports for each plan.

Is 20 GB enough for 90 days?

That works out at about 228 MB a day. As a guide, light messaging and maps use 1-3 GB, social and browsing 5-10 GB, and streaming or tethering 15 GB or more.

Can I make calls or send SMS?

No. Lumo plans for Japan and South Korea are data-only — they provide mobile internet with no calls, SMS or phone number. Keep your primary SIM active if you need voice and text.

Will my phone work with a Lumo eSIM?

Most phones released from 2018 onwards support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and many Samsung Galaxy models. Check Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) for an eSIM or Add Cellular Plan option, and make sure the phone is carrier-unlocked.

When do the 90 days start?

When the eSIM is activated, which our terms count as the moment the profile is installed and provisioned on your device, or the moment it first connects to a partner network — whichever happens first. Install it close to your trip rather than the day you buy it, and turn on data roaming for the Lumo line once you arrive in Japan and South Korea. That same moment is when the plan stops being refundable, so installing is not a step you can undo.

Can I share this plan over a hotspot?

Yes. Every option on this page is recorded as supporting hotspot and tethering, so a laptop or a second phone can use the connection. Shared traffic comes out of the same allowance.

Can I add more data to this plan?

Yes. Every option on this page supports top-ups: add data from your Lumo dashboard while the plan is still valid, or buy a new plan and install it when you need it.

How quickly can I get connected in Japan and South Korea?

No account or registration is required to buy. Your plan arrives instantly by email and activation takes about 30 seconds. Turn on data roaming for the Lumo line once you arrive in Japan and South Korea to start using mobile internet.

Can I get a refund if I do not use my plan?

Unused eSIMs can be cancelled and refunded in full within seven days, as long as they have not been activated. Once an eSIM has been activated it is no longer refundable.
